Never count on first impression

The government's continuous and serious devotion in the nation-building process was behind the fast-growing Renaissance

Very often people count on first impression to evaluate others; however, it is not always the right thing to do! As a book is not always being judged by its cover, people too are to be assessed neither by their appearance nor first attitude. In this regard, have you ever felt that you have been undervalued or misjudged by others, your boss, a colleague or a relative! Possibly, it could be someone whom you have met for the first time, but he/she doesn't know much about you. Likewise, this might happen the other way round as you might underestimate someone for his or her behaviour or decision, which you are not happy or don't agree with!

Such unkind feelings are experienced by many people for different reasons and sometimes happen unintentionally. Generally, people have been created with very distinctive characteristics, skills and abilities. Everyone is bestowed with different physical, mental and emotional features compared to others. People are different in what they are good at based on their capabilities and competencies in perceiving and making things. Each person has his or her own way of doing things!

In this regard, the Sultanate of Oman has been developed with great efforts of the government supported by the people of Oman and with the help of expatriates working here, especially during old days. However, the government's continuous and serious devotion in the nation-building process was behind the fast-growing Renaissance, which happened in a record time. Thanks to late Sultan Qaboos who devoted his time and efforts to build the nation and promised a better future for Omanis.

None of us can deny the role of expatriates living with us, who have contributed in the development of Oman, regardless of their nationalities. As a matter of fact, we needed their expertise as the country was still young and undeveloped when the Blessed Renaissance kicked off. Involving foreign expertise was very significant at the early stages of the nation-building journey. There is nothing wrong in getting the help of others when paving the way of national development, so Omanis could learn from them. Today, we still have expatriates working in various government and private organisations whose efforts and support are touching different spheres of life.

Nevertheless, expatriates are coming here to make a living in return; this undoubtedly comes as a first priority to them more than serving the nation. Likewise, some started their own businesses and investments in this blessed land of opportunities as the country has become home for many expatriates.

Regardless of the job title of Omanis, they are all competent and capable enough to handle all types of jobs. Therefore, they should not be stereotyped based on the first impression or judgement! Proving the remarkable excellence and hard work of Omanis, many of them are taking leading positions in several leading corporates of different businesses in the private sector. They are even supervising their expat colleagues even from European countries having ample expertise. Being in such jobs is not because they are Omanis, but they are well-qualified. Thus, Omanis are never to be misjudged as obviously evidences are many.

First impression is not always right neither on Omanis nor expats, so mutual trust should be shared between partners. People share expertise, respect and cultures with each other so they could live in harmony wherever they are. Hence, as a human being, it is not who you are, but it is what you do and what you give!
