

MUSCAT: The Oman International Pharmacy Congress and Exhibition (OIPC) will be launched on Sunday at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (OCEC) under the auspices of Dr Hilal bin Ali al Sabti, Minister of Health. This will be guided by Oman Vision 2040 pillars, Health Vision 2050, Sustainable Development Goals, WHO Global action plan for the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases and the Global NCD Compact to move towards universal health coverage.
The Congress, organised by the Ministry of Health (MoH) represented by the Directorate-General of Medical Supplies, under the theme ‘Shaping the Future of Pharmaceutical Services’, is hosting nearly 1,000 experts and other participants from regional as well as international healthcare sectors.
Representatives and officials from various advanced international organisations in the field of pharmaceutical practice, including the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), the Institute of Safe Medications Practices (ISMP) USA and Canada, and the pharmaceutical societies of Gulf countries, will take part in the Congress.
The participation of National Association for Primary Care (UK) and Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) this year will enrich the event with many international practices and experiences in the field of drug supply chains and advanced pharmaceutical practice in primary and specialised healthcare.
The three-day Congress will bring together nearly 100 international, gulf and local well-regarded speakers who will deliver 105 local and international working papers on the latest developments in the pharmaceutical practice distributed in 14 workshops and two panel discussions.
An exhibition featuring the various international manufacturers of medicines and medical devices, as well leading pharmacies in the Sultanate of Oman, will be held during the Conference days. Additionally, 42 posters prepared by health practitioners and pharmacy students will also be presented.
An array of topics have been shortlisted for pre-conference sessions including the multidisciplinary approach to managing drug shortages, medication safety in the Gulf, International Quality Standards and Regulatory Requirements, empowering and shaping the future of pharmacy education, and pharmaceutical societies in the Gulf region to address challenges and view opportunities.
While the second day will discuss topics including interchangeable biosimilar and biologics and the strategies for ensuring safe and effective usage, the latest advances in drug terapy and genomics and the latest trends in medication safety by ISMP USA & ISMP Canada, in addition to regulatory update session in pharmaceuticals, medical devices and manufacturing, and the latest trends in antimicrobial management, the third and the last day will touch upon combating non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in primary healthcare focusing on the role of clinical pharmacists in integrated primary care and the factors contributing to non-adherence to prescribed therapy in PCI.
Pharmacy services in solid organ transplantation and digital transformation of pharmacy services will be outlined on the third day, reviewing pharmacy-led virtual counselling clinics for renal transplant. Additionally, there will be an experience-based discussion of the Comprehensive Cancer Care and Research Centre on the implementation of fully automated pharmacy solutions.
