MUSCAT: A medical team specialised in obesity surgeries at Khoula Hospital succeeded in conducting the first bariatric surgery of its kind in the Sultanate of Oman. The surgery, made to relieve a patient suffering from severe obesity, involved a gastric bypass at the day care department. The patient was admitted and discharged on the same day.

Dr Badr bin Aflah al Hadhrami, a consultant in obesity and upper gastrointestinal surgery at Khoula Hospital, said that the operation figures among laparoscopic surgeries that take one day at the hospital.

Speaking about the operation, Dr Alia bint Ali al Balushiyah, Head of the Day Care Department, referred to ‘a noticeable rise’, worldwide, in obesity treatment surgeries over the last two decades. She affirmed that, in Khoula Day Care Department, such surgeries are conducted under the supervision of specialised medical teams. — ONA
