WISE11 summit highlights diverse perspectives of key innovators

In a groundbreaking revelation at the WISE 11 Summit in Doha, Nina Schick, a pioneer in Generative AI and Founder of Tamang Ventures, declared, “We stand at the threshold of a new era for intelligence, where machines are poised to reshape our existence, redefine our work, and fundamentally alter the human experience.”


Highlighting the rapid advancements in AI capabilities, Schick emphasised, “In this revolutionary age of intelligence, a symbiotic relationship between humans and machines will be the norm, fostering collaboration and synergy.”


During the masterclass titled ‘Critical Thinking in the Digital Age: AI, Information Literacy, and the Battle Against Disinformation,’ Dr Marc Owen Jones, Associate Professor at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, addressed the challenges faced by educational systems in countering misinformation, offering strategic insights into combatting AI-generated propaganda.


The ‘AI for Common Good’ panel explored the collective impact of AI applications on research, education, policy, philanthropy, and media, with Qatar’s Minister of Education and Higher Education, Buthaina al Nuaimi, emphasising the nation’s commitment to integrating AI into its education system.


The minister commented: “Qatar is one of the early adopters of a national K-12 AI curriculum. It aims at preparing students for a workforce that increasingly involves AI technologies and skills.”


In the ‘Empowering the Global South: Capacity Building for Self-determination’ panel, experts such as Yaser Bishr and Nariman Moustafa delved into the role of the Global South in shaping AI discourse and maintaining local autonomy in an increasingly automated world.


Conrad Wolfram, CEO of The Wolfram Group, delivered a keynote speech during the closing ceremony, underscoring the critical importance of computational thinking in the age of AI. He advocated for prioritising computational tools in education to address real-world challenges and foster critical thinking and creativity.


WISE11 showcased seven global research projects exploring diverse topics, including the impact of learning festivals on communities, the relationship between student and teacher well-being and learning, and education and employment for persons with disabilities (PwDs).
