Rubbish piles up as long holidays conclude

Every long holiday makes surroundings unclean with food waste, plastic wrappers, charcoal waste and not the least, the plastic waste, leaving the environment bear the brunt of a holiday.

“It is really apalling to see the pristine beaches, tidy parks and other tourist spots turning out to be small mountains of trash as the holidaymakers, more often than not, fail to dispose them off properly,” said a citizen who went to spent holidays at Al Riyam Park.

“What is even more shocking is that waste around the dust bins make a huge pile either because people pay less attention to throw them into the bins or cleaning workers fail to clear them off in time,” he added.

During holidays, beaches turn out to be shelves of plastic waste with bottles and bottle caps left recklessly and plastic wrappers floating in the ocean mirroring the heedless action of fellow holidaymakers.

And after holidays, cleaning workers find it extremely difficult to clean the areas which were waste-laden and it is the sensuous behaviour that fetches the desired results of cleanliness, according to a cleaner from the Muscat Municipality.

The Muscat Municipality had earlier launched a cleaning campaign named ‘Be careful’ in association with the Environment Authority, and called for the preservation of environment and to follow the systematic initiatives for cleanliness and aesthetic values.

The campaign, implemented as part of the general hygiene campaign in six wilayats of Muscat (Muscat, Muttrah, Bausher, Al Seeb, Al Amerat, and Qurayat), urging both citizens and expatriates to keep the city clean from various wastes, pollutants and residues on an ongoing basis.

“This is because, maintaining cleanliness is hygiene too as improper diaposal of waste and pollutants can affect the land, sea and air environments, and cause health and environmental damage to humans and living organisms,” Muscat Municipality official said.
