MUSCAT: Environmental services powerhouse Veolia has pledged to support Oman’s Net Zero strategy by embracing sustainable energy solutions – a commitment reflected in the recent launch of a solar PV farm to partly power the operation of its water desalination at Sur in Al Sharqiyah South Governorate.

In exclusive remarks to the Observer, Philippe Bourdeaux, Executive Vice President Africa and Middle East at Veolia, described the solar farm, which was inaugurated last week, as a game-changer in renewable electricity for water desalination.

Highlighting the unique features of the Sur Desalination Plant, Bourdeaux emphasised the utilisation of the world's largest beach-wells’ field, coupled with an innovative smart membrane system, that have set the plant apart in the realm of water treatment.

Now, with the integration of green power from the solar park, the Sur Desalination Plant stands as a symbol of sustainable progress in Al Sharqiyah South Governorate, he noted.

The executive stressed the importance of the solar initiative in decarbonising operations, addressing environmental challenges, and supporting Oman Vision 2040. The solar PV project is estimated to reduce 27,200 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, aligning with Oman's dedication to promoting sustainability.

Operating globally with nearly 220,000 employees, Veolia aims to provide efficient and practical solutions for water, waste, and renewable energy sectors, said Bourdeaux.

Oman, with its political stability and economic potential, provides ample room for development, innovation, and progress, making it a strategic region for Veolia, he added.
