Al Alawi named as head coach of U-19 football team

MUSCAT: The Oman Football Association (OFA) has announced recently appointment of the national head coach, Ahmed bin Mubarak al Alawi as the new national U-19 football team replacing Spanish coach David Gordo who quit the team since May.


Al Alawi, who hails from Sur, served the U-19 football team as assistant coach to coach Gordo since January 2022. He had served the team in several regional and continental events including the 2023 AFC U20 Asian Cup Uzbekistan qualifiers where Oman boys had managed to advance to the finals.


Ahmed worked with other domestic teams in Al Sharqiyah N&S governorates and had served also many football academies for junior players. He is experienced in providing the right training sessions and the desired technical skills for the U-15, U17 and U19 teams.


Inline to the announcement of the recently appointed head coach, the team will begin their first warm up training session on 6-8 of November for the first batch of players, while the following batch will take place during 8 to10 of November. Both camps will be held in Bidiyah and it will be many criteria to select the top players from both batches.


With the formation of newly coaching staff, the national U-19 football team will eye for a new chapter with more successful accomplishments in different forthcoming participation at regional and international levels. The expected approach for the newly appointed coaching staff will be re-forming the squad with selecting new players from the series of short domestic camps and will shape their readiness for the future events. The future events will be AFC U20 Asian Cup 2025 Qualifiers during September 2024, while the finals of 2025 AFC U20 Asian Cup is scheduled to take place during February 2025.


Oman’s last appearance were in the 2023 AFC U20 Asian Cup Uzbekistan finals. Oman team campaign in the Asian Cup had ended with only one point from a goalless draw against Jordan. Oman had suffered two defeats in the first two games of the group against South Korea and Tajikistan. It was the third participation for the Red Warriors junior in Asian AFC Under-20 finals in Uzbekistan after 2014 and 2000 editions.
