Muscat: Dr Abdullah Nasser al Harrasi, Minister of Information, held a meeting on Monday with a delegation from the Foreign Press Association (FPA), currently visiting the Sultanate of Oman.

The minister outlined the role of Ministry of Information in upgrading the performance of Omani media to keep pace with the latest technical and occupational developments in the international arena.

Dr Abdullah underscored the role of the media—through its conventional and modern channels and platforms—in supporting efforts for peace. He laid emphasis on the responsibility entrusted to the press in revealing facts, notably in humanitarian issues, and defending the rights of civilians to lead a dignified and stable life. He pointed out that the freedom of the press should be a ‘responsible’, ‘disciplined’, ‘impartial’ freedom aligned only with the principles of truth and justice.

On their turn, members of the FPA delegation expressed their thanks to the Ministry of Information for inviting them to visit Oman and learn about the stages of its development in various fields. They showed their admiration for the country’s cultural and modern landmarks. They also lauded the growth of Omani media and its refined content.

Founded about 130 years ago, the Foreign Press Association acts as a non-political body funded by members’ subscriptions. The FPA is one of the oldest journalist associations in the world. It is the only association of its kind in the United Kingdom.
