Muscat: Al Musannah Race Week kicked off by welcoming 77 of the very best young sailors from across the region for a week of coaching, competition and camaraderie. The first races get underway on October 21, in the Optimist, ILCA 4, ILCA 6, ILCA 7 and RS Venture Connect classes, showing the diversity of competition and that sailing is a sport for all, with the winners receiving their prizes on October 24.
Held at the Barceló Al Musannah Resort, all of the sailors have a chance to develop their racing skills and tactics with sailing lessons provided by world-class professional coaches prior to the start of racing and throughout the week.
The RS Venture Connect class at Al Musannah Race Week offers people with disabilities the opportunity to compete at the event as part of Oman Sail’s SailFree programme, the first of its kind in the region, run in cooperation with bp Oman and the Oman Paralympic Committee.
Al Musannah Race Week is also an opportunity to share Oman’s unique and welcoming culture with visitors, and help talented young sailors build cross-border friendships with each other so that they may learn from each other and follow each other’s journey through the sport.
Abdulaziz al Shidi, Al Musannah Race Week Principal Race Officer, said, “Al Musannah Race Week has long been a favourite of young sailors from across the world. It is an opportunity to sail in perfect conditions here in Oman, advance sailing knowledge from experienced coaches and sail competitively against sailors of a similar age. Sailing is a global family, and our aim is always to help prepare young sailors for a future in the sport and Al Musannah Race Week is also an ideal opportunity to get to know one another and build life-long friendships.”
Oman Sail will continue its commitment to the environment of Oman during Al Musannah Race Week by organising a beach clean-up campaign at Al Musannah Public Beach as part of its ongoing UN #cleanseas pledge to reduce waste and keep Oman’s coastline clean. Recycling facilities will be provided onsite, and all visitors will be encouraged to become guardians of the oceans throughout the event and beyond.
