The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology has issued new rules for taxi vehicles based on the Land Transport Law issued by Royal Decree No 10/2016.

The ministry stipulated that to do drive taxis, one must have a light driving licence that must be three years old from the date of issuance, and the operator's salary must not exceed RO 600 if he or she is an employee in the private sector.

The age must be at least 21 years and not more than 60 years. One-year extension can be given based on a medical report from accredited health institutions indicating his or her ability to drive a taxi.

It is also required that to carry out operations at airports, ports and hotels, the age of the taxi vehicle must not be more than seven years from the manufacture year, while to operate in other public places, it should not be more than 10 years.

The ministry stressed the need for everyone to reconcile their situation before September 1, 2024. The ministry recently implemented the decision to include taxi owners at airports to operate under two app-based operators as part of the efforts in the first phase of its initiative to improve the public transportation system.

The ministry stated the second phase would cover tourist complexes, hotels, commercial centres and ports beginning from November 1. The third phase will cover white and orange street taxis from January 1, which are currently mandated to operate as per a mobile-based meter called Aber.
