MUSCAT: The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth has embarked on the procedures for establishing the Sports City Project in response to Royal directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik who directed the establishment of an integrated sports city to host regional and international tournaments.

Basil bin Ahmed al Rawas, Under-Secretary for Sports and Youth at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, (MoCSY), affirmed that the ministry immediately put into effect the Royal directives issued by His Majesty the Sultan. His Majesty’s directives, he said, came in continuation of the support and attention he accords to the Omani youth.

Al Rawas added that paying attention to youth is a guarantee for the future, thus it is an enhancement of their political, economic and social participation. This gives young people opportunities for empowerment and improves their levels of well-being through practicing sports in the designated places that suit their ambitions and aspirations of an outstanding country at the international level. Attaching an importance to sports and empowering young people could help achieve economic development and yield benefits in various sectors and elevate the status of the Sultanate of Oman in global sports.

“Starting last Thursday, we began collecting information about international think tanks that will enable us to implement the sports city project. We seek to create the sports city as described by the Royal directives, one that will be able to attract regional and global sports tournaments and competitions in addition to its goal of investing in youth and empowering them.

"The implementation of the project will be overseen by HH Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham al Said, Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, out of his keenness to ensure that the city has high technical specifications and modern technologies capable of hosting international championships,” the official said.

Regarding His Majesty’s constant attention to sports, Al Rawas said, “This attention has recently been manifested by His Majesty’s directives regarding camel racing, a deeply-rooted sport in the Omani society which is why the Ministry will endeavour, in coordination with the governors’ offices and the Omani Camel Racing Federation, to put His Majesty’s directives into force by establishing a number of race tracks and restoring existing ones according to the highest technical specifications." — ONA
