The fisheries sector in Oman plays an important role in achieving food security and eradicating poverty, according to Hasna al Harthiya (pictured), Assistant Representative of the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) in the Sultanate of Oman. More than 90% of fisheries in the country are small-scale, and coastal women play a vital role in the sector, specifically in post-harvest activities, she noted.

The FAO recently conducted a socio-economic survey in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources on the cost of production in fisheries. The survey showed that small-scale fisheries generated high returns from investments and showed good economic performance. This is due to the good management and abundance of the productive marine resources of the country. The value of production was estimated at about RO 240 million and the average landed value was RO 0.7 / kg.

The survey also highlighted the vital role that coastal women play in fishing activities along the entire coast. Coastal women are involved in a variety of tasks, including collecting shells, picking sea cucumbers and collecting oysters, sewing nets, and manufacturing and marketing marine products. Some also help their husbands and family members with artisanal fishing activities.

Despite their important contributions, coastal women in Oman often face challenges in access to markets, finance, and training. FAO is working with the government and other partners to address these challenges and empower coastal women to play an even greater role in the fisheries sector.

For example, FAO is implementing a project to develop the capacities of coastal women in small-scale fisheries. The project is providing training in a variety of areas, including business management, marketing, and food processing. FAO is also working to connect coastal women to markets and financial services.

By supporting coastal women, FAO is helping to ensure the sustainability of the fisheries sector in Oman and improving the livelihoods of coastal communities.
