In two weeks, the Sultanate of Oman is all set to hold elections for the Majlis Ash'shura 10th Term. There are many challenges that the citizens face. The government agencies need to heed to the recommendations and suggestions of the shura council.
Hence the question comes... do voters care about the electoral programmes presented by some candidates contesting the elections which will be held on October 29.
Based on feedback from the public, I believe that eligible voters will choose their candidates based on their affiliations, and not the capabilities and competencies of the candidate. It will also depend on the candidate’s relation with the voter. Merit should be taken into account when choosing a candidate.
It is imperative that voters cast their ballot for the most competent candidate. This will ensure that only the wise, enlightened and responsible candidates will be elected to the council. The elected members should also ideally have analytical skills, deep insight of issues of significance to his community, and issues of national interest.
As we are impacted by global events and developments, it is only the knowledgeable and insightful can come up with the best solutions to mitigate these impacts on the local population. Hence the need to vote only for the most responsible candidates.
Shura members or those elected to other representative bodies have a great responsibility in handling issues of import to the community, and the country in general. The government, for its part, must take into account the opinions, suggestions and recommendations submitted by the council. This approach will enhance the prestige of the elected members and encourage them to be fair and committed to their constituents. At the same time, whose actions and deeds violate local laws and legislations must be made accountable.
Today, candidates use social media and public engagements to reach out to their constituents. Nowadays, voters choose their candidates based on a loose set of criteria, and not on his/her competence. This shortcoming should be addressed, so it does not become a norm when future generations cast their ballots.
Today, there are dozens of challenges facing the Omani society that require the new council to focus on in its discussions and proposals. The issue of job-seekers, low salaries, laid-off workers, supply shortfall in housing, among other social and economic issues, require appropriate solutions.
