MADHA: The Environment Authority, represented by the National Biodiversity Survey project, registered the presence of the Arabian lynx in the western mountain range of Musandam Governorate at a height of 509 metres above sea level using the camera trap technology.

An endangered animal, the Arabian lynx is a wild cat and one of the wild mammals that inhabit the Hajar mountain ranges and Dhofar mountains which is part of its habitat that stretches across the dry regions and deserts of North Africa and the Middle East. The Arabian lynx feeds on multiple kinds of food including small mammals, birds, and reptiles which enables it to adapt to tough environments.

The survey, the first of its kind in Musandam Governorate, indicates the biodiversity that exists in Musandam Governorate. It also serves as a means of documenting and protecting the wildlife in the governorate.

In March, the project’s work team installed 45 camera traps across Musandam Governorate according to a scientific method that was determined based on international biodiversity surveying methods. — ONA
