MUSCAT: Seeking to strengthen its positioning as leading industrial port on Oman’s southeast coast, Port of Duqm has signed an agreement with the National Documents and Archives Authority (NDAA), a pivotal institution that oversees the professional management of the country’s national archives.

The agreement was signed by Reggy Vermeulen, CEO of Port of Duqm Company, with Dr Hamad bin Mohammed al Dhawyani, Chairman of NDAA. The pact sets out procedural guidelines for document management within Port of Duqm Company – a move that will also contribute to strengthening service delivery at the gateway in line with the strategic Duqm Industrial Master Plan.

The Duqm Industrial Master Plan project is a significant element of national and economic development for the Sultanate of Oman. The development of the Industrial master plan and the Port of Duqm aims to enhance and significantly improve the capacity of exports of petrochemicals, minerals, and key manufactured goods, which will act to benefit the Omani economy.

The guidelines approved by Dr Al Dhawyani and Vermeulen include a comprehensive document classification scheme and retention schedules. These guidelines are in line with the vision of parent holding company Asyad Group to implement a modern document management system that complies with the National Documents and Archives Law issued under Royal Decree 60/2007.

The document classification scheme and retention schedules are not just administrative tools; they form the core foundation for building a modern and contemporary document management system that adheres to the latest international standards and benchmarks. This system involves the meticulous registration and coding of documents based on the classification scheme designed for this purpose, facilitating their identification and easy retrieval.

In addition, this document management guide also plays a crucial role in managing documents throughout their lifecycle, ensuring compliance with retention periods. This comprehensive approach contributes to the regulation of all document-related processes, including disposal, conversion, and transfer. Ultimately, it paves the way for a transformation toward electronic document management.

The approved document management system represents the culmination of concerted efforts by specialists and stakeholders who have been diligently developing these tools in multiple stages.
