High power bills talk of the town

Muscat: The surge in electricity bills trending on social media platforms in the country last week, prompted Nama Group to issue a statement.

According to both citizens and residents, authorities should take steps to find solutions to high utility bills that are a shock to everyone as there is no respite from summer even in the second half of September.

Shelling out more on utility bills will diminish the purchasing power, affecting the businesses in general.

Abdul Rahman, a citizen, said that the bills have been touching around RO180 to RO200 and there is no way one can survive these weather conditions without air-conditioners.

"Several landlords have installed pre-paid smart meters in their apartments and the tenants have no option but to recharge a sizable amount every week. I recharge RO50 and it lasts around a month, " an expat said.

The general view is that a bill of around RO100 and above for someone with salaries of RO500 plus is virtually unaffordable.

Namaa said it followed with great interest what was being circulated on social media regarding the issue of electricity bills for the summer period.

The company said all citizens must ensure that the data is updated to avail of the government support allocated to the basic account.

In this regard, the company confirms to all its subscribers the following: It is necessary to ensure that the data is updated in order to benefit from the government support allocated to the basic account with the number of two accounts for each subscriber, as this reflects positively on the value of the subscriber’s bill, through the application of the special tariff for this category of accounts.

Benefiting from the national electricity subsidy program, which includes an additional subsidy of more than 30 percent compared to the basic account tariff, which will be reflected positively in the value of the electricity bill, provided that the eligibility conditions mentioned in the electronic platform of the national subsidy program are met.

The company said it would like to assure all of its valued subscribers that all comments and inquiries are subject to attention and follow-up.
