MUSCAT: His Majesty, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq announced that Oman commits to achieving Net Zero by 2050. According to the Sultanate of Oman’s National Strategy for an Orderly Transition to Net Zero Report published in 2022, Oman is making great effort towards this goal. be’ah has been dedicated to creating a sustainable future for generations to come by focusing on a number of renewable initiatives. be’ah is in the process of developing a Waste-to-Energy (WTE) plant in Barka that will treat 4,500 tonnes of municipal solid waste per day. The plant will generate 130-150 megawatts of electricity allowing the station to reduce the carbon footprint from the current total emissions of landfills within 35 years. Additionally, be’ah in collaboration with Oman Cement Company will work on reducing the pollution caused by cement manufacturing by using Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) which is produced by utilizing municipal solid waste.

As part of the national effort, be’ah and OQ Trading (OQT) are collaborating on an emission reduction project that will be implemented in the waste management industry. This partnership will allow the development of waste management practices aligned with international emission reduction standards. It will also explore opportunities in waste management and waste-to-energy, including landfill rehabilitation for biogas and methane reduction projects. The partnership supports Oman's decarbonisation and climate goals toward Net Zero by 2050, with a focus on also obtaining emission reduction credits.

be’ah is also currently conducting a quantitative assessment of the Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) released into the atmosphere through its operations, to establish a baseline from the beginning of 2020 till 2050 and to assess the GHG savings contribution of be’ah’s future projects. The outcome of the study will enable be’ah to formulate an effective sustainability/ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) strategy. Additionally, it will enhance funding opportunities and support from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to implement climate mitigation and adaptation projects. This project will contribute to supporting Oman’s goals to meet its Paris Convention Agreement targets.

Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (be’ah) was established in 2007 to support a cohesive plan laid out in a National Strategy Report in 2006 to promote proper waste management practices. This includes the effective use of resources, development of adequate infrastructure and implementation of sustainable goals to make a lasting impact on the country’s future.

Headquartered in Muscat and and a subsidiary of OIA, be’ah is responsible for managing municipal, industrial and healthcare waste in the country, providing waste management services from collection to disposal to both private and public sectors.

be’ah is committed to integrating the principles of a circular economy business model in a sustainable manner. This commitment is exemplified throughout the company’s operations, as well as its consistent communication with stakeholder groups at multiple levels to promote circular economy through capacity building and raising awareness in society at large, and the communities that it operates within including academia, Omani-owned SMEs, entrepreneurs, as well as engaging with international partners that bring global experience and innovation.
