The seasonal misty khareef is finally exiting Dhofar, which means that the monsoon season is now coming to an end and this governorate in the southern part of the country is now ready to welcome serb or the autumn season. As Dhofar heads for a change of season, this also means that people in the country will be looking for alternative places to visit.
Within the next few weeks, the weather conditions would become perfect and cooler for an adventure in Al Wusta, one of Oman's remote governorates but filled with some of the best, awe-inspiring natural attractions.
Al Wusta is about a five-hour drive from Muscat and while there are two ways to reach the governorate, the most enjoyable means is by taking the coastal highway passing through Sur, Ras al Hadd, and Ashkarah.
When in Al Wusta, never miss visiting Al Khaluf. The journey from Muscat to Al Khaluf is an adventure tailored for rugged off-roading enthusiasts. The fact is, whichever part of Al Wusta you are planning to visit, it is highly recommended to take a four-wheel drive.
The route around Al Khaluf demands a double-gear off-road vehicle, as the terrain can be challenging. Facilities along the way are scarce so camping is the primary accommodation option. With no access to electricity and a limited cellular signal, this journey offers a true escape from the modern world.
Road conditions are ever-changing, with shifting sands that can pose risks, including thick and loose sand patches that may turn treacherous, resembling quicksand in some areas. Careful navigation is key.
With its long stretch of white sandy beaches and sleepy villages, Al Khaluf will be enjoyed by those who love the pure bliss of silence only broken by the loud thunderous noise of waves hitting virgin shores or birds fighting over food.
Villagers living in the area are dependent on fishing as their main source of living. Most of them find the most convenient places to build their homes where they can access shallow shores where they built salt ponds. During some periods of the year, you will find people harvesting salt in these ponds.
Drive a few kilometers deeper into the heart of Al Wusta and you will be rewarded with the beautiful views of Sugar Dunes which got its name from the powdery white sand incomparable anywhere else in the country.
In winter, one will easily find a group of campers spread across its entire expanse enjoying beach activities from swimming, to kayaking to dunes bashing and for those who can afford, even ATV rides by the beach.
As a side trip, people usually make a stop in one of the most remarkable shallow caves in the country. Referred to as the Al Khaluf Cave, it is an intriguing chamber with a narrow entrance that gives way to a beach hidden inside a cave perfect for picnics.
Within the governorate, one of the frequently visited locations is Barr al Hikman, also known as Shorebird Paradise. Every year, thousands, if not millions, of migrating birds come to visit for food. These birds include flamingos, sand plovers, sandpipers, egrets, herons, and even spoonbills. The beaches of Barr al Hikman are rich in seashells and algae that are perfect for foraging animals. Other than outdoor enthusiasts, this also makes Barr al Hikman ideal for bird photographers.
As of late, some adventure companies have built temporary shelters and adventure centre in the area where one can rent a kayak or even kite surfing and surfing gear. These companies however may charge a bit more so it is still highly recommended to bring your own tent and food. It is also advisable to bring your own kayaking gear as access to such equipment can be limited.
For those who have more time on their hand, you can visit the three islands facing Mahoot namely Mahoot Island, Rak, and Heb. These islands are famous for their abundance of shrimp and many types of fish.
As you embark on this adventure, prepare for a journey into the heart of Oman's raw and untamed landscapes, where nature's unpredictability and the thrill of off-roading converge to create an unforgettable experience.
