Muscat: The Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology (MTCIT) has floated a tender for the implementation of the new alternative road to Jabel al Akhdar from South Al Batinah.

The bid is for the preparation of tender documents for the design and building of the road linking Jabel al Akhdar with South al Batinah.

Tender documents will be available for sale on September 17, with bids expected to be floated on October 15.

The scope for work includes shall evaluation of submitted financial and technical bids, providing clarification support to the bid enquires, preparing the contract document, and carrying value engineering exercises for the offers.

According to a top official at the MTCIT, this road project is important as it will easily link prominent tourist sites with the rest of the country.

“Jabal Akhdar is one of them as the place has so much potential. Presently, there is only one road to reach Jabal Akhdar which is hard to navigate for smaller cars. So, the ministry is looking into one or two alternatives where even smaller cars could travel with ease," he told the Observer.

Around 79,000 people visited Jabel al Akhdar during the first half of this year.

According to the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), the total number of visitors this year until the end of June 2023 was about 79,034, which included 28,406 Omanis, and 3,848 Saudis.

Due to its moderate summer and cold winter, the Jabel al Akhdar attracts a year-round turnout of visitors. It is also home to many agricultural crops like pomegranates, grapes, peaches, apricots, and roses.
