Muscat: The Muscat Governorate Police arrested a citizen on charges of running over an Asian expatriate and escaping from the scene of the accident on Friday, which led to his death. Legal procedures have been initiated against him.

As per the new traffic law issued in 2018, leaving the site of an accident without informing the authorities could lead to serious ramifications, according to the Royal Oman Police (ROP). According to the new traffic regulations, drivers who leave the accident site before all procedures are completed will be fined RO35 and given two black points.

Article 38 The driver of a vehicle, if involved in a traffic accident that causes personal injury or damage to the public or personal property, must stop and immediately report the accident to the nearest police station or ambulance authority.

Article 39: The owner of the motor vehicle, the licensee, the holder of the vehicle, or the person responsible for it, shall be fully responsible for any breach of the provisions of this law or the Regulations thereof unless he proves that he was not the driver of the vehicle when the breach took place, provided that he is able to provide sufficient information about the person who was driving the vehicle.
