Al Baleed Museum — part of one of Dhofar’s richest archaeological attractions — is one of the most important historical tourist sites in the governorate, and a must-visit for anyone interested in learning about its deep history and culture.
Inaugurated in 2007, the museum features three exhibition halls. Most notable is the Historical Hall, which displays a collection of antiquities and artifacts that trace the history of Dhofar from prehistoric times to the present day. Visitors can see everything from ancient pottery and jewellery to traditional weapons and household items.The Maritime Hall, which is just as spectacular in its displays, tells the story of Dhofar’s important role in trade and navigation. The exhibits include models of ships, maps, and other maritime artifacts.
Finally, the Media Hall features a variety of films, videos, and interactive displays that bring the history of Dhofar to life. In addition to its exhibits, Al Baleed Museum also offers a variety of educational programmes and activities. These include guided tours, workshops, and cultural events.
The museum also includes a specialised department for small and medium enterprises as well as the productive family, which is throughout the year and is not linked to a certain season. This comes within the initiative of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism in supporting productive families and assist SMEs.
Al Baleed Archaeological Park is one of the most prized heritage destinations in Dhofar Governorate. It is an ancient city that was once a major trading centre. The park is home to a number of ruins, including temples, palaces, and houses. It is a popular tourist destination, with over 60,242 visitors in 2023.
Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Al Baleed Archaeological Park and its centrepiece museum are both important cultural attractions in the Dhofar Governorate.
