Oman's documentary wins awards in India film festival

New Delhi: Oman's documentary film Al Zeeg, which means sugarcane syrup in Arabic, won awards for Best Cinematography and Best Actor at a film festival in India.


Al Zeeg, produced by the Omani Film Society, reviews the relationship of the Omani with the cultivation of sugarcane. It also deals with the human, economic and social aspects of this profession.


It was filmed in several wilayats of the Sultanate of Oman including Nizwa, Bahla, Al Hamra and Manah. The film won several awards in various Arab and international festivals, and was selected to participate in a number of international and local festivals.


Al Zeeg was selected for the 12th Arab Film Festival organised by the Korean-Arab Society.


Al Zeeg was among 10 films, representing nine Arab nations including Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Algeria, Jordan, Egypt, Qatar, Palestine and Oman. It marks a milestone for Omani cinema with Al Zeeg being the first film from Oman to participate in the festival since its inception in 2008. The film was also screened in Busan and Seoul. — ONA
