New Delhi: The Government of India is developing 11 Industrial Corridor Projects as part of the National Industrial Corridor Programme across the country in a phased manner.
As per the approved institutional and financial structure for the industrial corridors, the Government of India, through the National Industrial Corridor Development & Implementation Trust (NICDIT), provides funds as equity/debt for the development of world-class trunk infrastructure in the industrial nodes/regions under industrial corridors and the States are responsible for
making available contiguous and encumbrance-free land parcels, according to a government statement.
National Industrial Corridor Development Programme is India's most ambitious infrastructure programme aiming to develop new industrial cities as "Smart Cities" and converge next-generation technologies across infrastructure sectors.
The government is developing various industrial corridor projects as part of the National Industrial Corridor Programme which is aimed at the development of futuristic industrial cities in India which can compete with the best manufacturing and investment destinations in the world. The same will create employment opportunities and economic growth leading to overall socioeconomic development, according to the official website.
While developing the Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) project, Western Dedicated Freight Corridor has been considered the transportation backbone while Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor has been considered the backbone for Amritsar Kolkata Industrial Corridor (AKIC) project.
For other industrial corridor projects like Chennai Bengaluru Industrial Corridor (CBIC) and Bengaluru Mumbai Industrial Corridor (BMIC), NH-4 has been considered as the backbone. For the East Coast Economic Corridor (ECEC), NH-5 which is part of the Golden Quadrilateral, the Kolkata–Chennai rail route has been considered as the transport backbone. The proposed North-South East-West and
East Coast Dedicated Freight Corridors will further supplement the existing transportation backbone for the corresponding industrial corridors.
National Industrial Corridor projects are getting developed on the overall framework of PM GatiShakti - National Master Plan to provide systematic, multi-modal connectivity to various economic zones for a seamless movement of people, goods and services resulting in efficient conduct of logistics and economic activities, according to Make in India website.
The development of these eleven industrial corridor projects will be implemented through the National Industrial Corridor Development and Implementation Trust (NICDIT). These corridors are spread across India, with
a strategic focus on inclusive development to provide a boost to industrialization and planned urbanization. Smart cities are being developed along these corridors.
