Salalah to host 2023 Arab Junior Athletics Championship

Salalah city will host the 19th edition of the 2023 Arab Junior Athletics Championship under organisation of Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth represented by Dhofar Directorate of Culture, Sports and Youth and Oman Athletics Association (OAA) in coordination with the Arab Athletics Association (AAA). The Arab athletics meet will run during September 8 to 11 and competitions will be held in men’s and women’s junior categories.


The organising committee reviewed and discussed all the technical and logistics arrangement for the championship recently in Salalah. The meeting was chaired by Shaikh Mohammed bin Saif al Busaidy, Wali of Salalah, in presence of Shaikh Salim al Amri, Chairman of OAA, and other committee members. During the meeting, it has been agreed to form the main organising committee and the sub-committees for the smooth conduct of the event.

The chairman of OAA appreciated all the efforts that has been taken by different government and private sectors towards the success of this Arab meet in Oman. “With this valuable support from the government entities and the sponsorship from private sector, this will lead to a positive impact on the championship to be held in Salalah successfully. A special thanks to the Arab Athletics Association for their trust to host this prestigious event in Sultanate of Oman. We are looking forward to welcome all the participants in Salalah city,” he said.


On the other hand, OAA and AAA revealed the logo of the 2023 Arabian Junior Athletics Championship. The logo featured Omani flag with Khanjar besides an athlete. Oman’s athletes will eye a solid show and register top results by claiming more medals in the competitions. The teams are currently getting ready for the championship.

The national athletes had delivered an impressive performance during the Arab Athletics Championship which was held in Marrakesh, Morocco during June. Oman athletics team had ended the championship with with five medals including three gold, one silver and one bronze. Oman had finished fifth place in the overall medals tally. Oman sprinter Mohammed al Saadi had managed to clinch the silver medal in the men’s 200 metres race as he clocked 20.62 seconds. Oman’s top long jumper Salim bin Saleh al Yarubi brought home another gold medal after he bagged gold with a distance of 7.75 metres. Oman’s 4X400 metres relay team comprising Mohammed al Mabsali, Othman al Busaidy, Hamza al Jabi and Ahmed al Saadi emerged with the bronze medal after finishing the race within a timing of 3.14.25 minutes.
