MTCIT enhances maritime affairs services, records growth during H1

MUSCAT: The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) enhanced maritime affairs services and recorded growth during the first half of this year by issuing 406 marine activities services, an increase of 81 per cent compared to the same period last year. It also issued 217 marine unit registration certificates and 622 renewed marine unit certificates.


The Ministry also issued 165 navigational permits for foreign ships to operate in the territorial waters of Oman during the first half of this year, compared to 167 permits during the same period last year. The permits granted for ships include: tugs, yachts, dry bulk, oil tankers, trucks and ships tourist.


With regard to the certificates issued to seafarers, 357 certificates were issued during the first half of this year, with a decrease of 9 per cent compared to the same period last year. Nine security compliance certificates for port facilities, 9 permits for diplomatic ships and 108 permits, including 63 permits for Sultan Qaboos Port and 45 permits for Salalah Port were also issued.


On the other hand, the number of foreign vessels operating in the territorial sea of Oman that were inspected and their data entered into the MOU and Riyadh Memorandum of Understanding database during the first half of this year was 153 vessels, an increase of 13 per cent compared to the corresponding period last year, while the number of offending vessels was 90.
