In the recently released InterNations Expat Insider survey for 2023, the Sultanate of Oman has achieved an impressive ranking as one of the best countries for expatriates to live and work. Known for its rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes and welcoming atmosphere, Oman has emerged as a top destination for individuals seeking a fulfilling international experience.

InterNations Expat Insider, one of the largest expat networks worldwide, conducted an in-depth survey of over 12,000 expats worldwide, representing 171 nationalities and living in 172 countries or territories. The survey covered 56 aspects of expat life, including quality of life, work-life balance, personal finance, healthcare and safety, among others. Oman stood out with its remarkable performance, securing top 12 overall country ranking.

Oman's success can be attributed to its remarkable efforts in creating an inclusive and supportive environment for expatriates. The country's strong economy, stable political climate, and a commitment to cultural diversity have made it an attractive destination for foreign professionals and families.

The Sultanate of Oman ranked 3rd in expat essentials index covering four subcategories like admin topics, housing digital life and language. “Expats in Oman do not struggle to get by without speaking Arabic (4th), though close to half (47%) also find the local language easy to learn (vs. 40% globally),” the report said.

“Housing is readily available (3rd) and even comparatively cheap (6th). In fact, over three in five (61%) give the affordability of housing in Oman a favourable rating, compared to just 38% of expats worldwide. It is easy to open a local bank account according to 72% of respondents (vs. 62% globally), and the visa process is not much of an issue, either (64% happy vs. 57%). All in all, Oman places 8th in the admin topics subcategory,” the report added.

Another key factor contributing to Oman's high ranking was the exceptional quality of life it offers. Expats praised the country for its friendly and welcoming locals, affordable healthcare system, and excellent education facilities. The report said in quality of life index, “Oman has seen gains across most factors of the index, rising 14 places in the ranking (24th). Changes include, for example, a more favorable view of government support for policies to protect the environment (from 14th to 2nd).” Additionally, Oman's efforts to foster cultural integration and provide support to expats have been commendable. The country is among the top 10 in ease of settling in index.

Oman's thriving job market and career prospects were also highly regarded by expats. The country has been actively investing in infrastructure development, tourism, and various other sectors, creating numerous employment opportunities for both locals and expatriates. The survey highlighted that expats in Oman enjoy a good work-life balance, job security, and opportunities for career growth.

In working abroad index, the report said “Oman is one of the biggest winners of this index. It gains 16 places, ranking 23rd in 2023 compared to 39th in 2022. The country has made the biggest strides in the career prospects (from 40th to 19th in 2023) and salary & job security subcategories (41st to 26th)."

As Oman continues to prioritise the well-being and satisfaction of its expat population, it is expected to remain a sought-after destination for individuals looking to pursue new opportunities abroad. The recognition bestowed by InterNations Expat Insider further solidifies Oman's position as a leading destination for expatriates in 2023.
