MUSCAT: Oman Flour Mills Company is keen on an annual basis to support Omani farmers by purchasing varieties of wheat, as part of the program to support the purchase of wheat with the aim of encouraging them to expand its cultivation as one of the important strategic crops, in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources.
The company confirmed that it has so far received nearly 5,000 tonnes of wheat from farmers, as part of its efforts to enhance food security efforts, support farmers and enable them to enter the food products market.
Haitham bin Muhammad al Fannah, CEO of the Oman Flour Mills, said, “The company appreciates the supreme interest given by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, may God protect and preserve him - and the directions of the government and private investments aimed at strengthening the food security system in the Sultanate of Oman. This interest is a great motivation for all parties and investors to double investment in the areas of food in order to achieve self-sufficiency and export the surplus abroad.”
In a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA), he added that the company will continue with its plans to purchase wheat products from farmers during the coming years, develop it and put it as a product in the local and regional markets, noting that wheat is acceptable to consumers due to its high quality.
