NIZWA: Cute electric cars that stole the limelight in Nizwa will now vie for the hearts and minds of Khareef tourists in Dhofar.
Abu Yamena Trading, the company behind these eco-friendly cars, had trialled the service last year in Salalah with two cars to gauge the response of the public. Buoyed by people’s enthusiasm for the ride, this year the company is bringing 6-8 cars to Wadi Darbat and Al Mughsayl in Dhofar.
Yunus bin Ali al Anqoudi of Abu Yamena Trading said: " We will be present at Khareef Salalah Festival for marketing and investment purposes and also to help visitors of Khareef Salalah to move from one place to another, especially for the elderly and children who are unable to walk."
The idea is to offer comfortable transport to tourists from one place to another. These cars will be available from the end of July till August. It depends on whether the sites are ready for the deployment of these cars. Transportation will be available throughout the day, from 9 am to 6 pm.
Al Anqoudi thanked Dr Ahmed bin Mohsin al Ghassani, Chairman of Dhofar Municipality, for the opportunity to participate in the Khareef Dhofar. He also thanked all the supporters from the Roads Department and Project Management Department.
These golf cart like cars, which run at a top speed of 40 km per hour, are an attraction for tourists in the old Al Aqr neighbourhood in the Wilayat of Nizwa in Al Dakhiliyah Governorate. Visitors get a chance to see many landmarks like old houses, mosques, Nizwa Fort and souq.
There are four electric cars in all; two cars can accommodate six people and two cars can accommodate nine people. There are now two routes. One route runs around the village of Al Oqur, starting from the front of the central market to the castle of Nizwa. The other route is for Al Oqur lanes and narrow streets.
