Oman is launching a groundbreaking initiative that harnesses treated water for enhanced food production. During a signing ceremony attended by officials, including Dr Mahad bin Said Baawin, Minister of Labour and General Supervisor of the National Employment Programme, Oman took a significant stride towards achieving self-sufficiency in food and driving economic growth.

Led by Dr Saud bin Hamoud Al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, and supported by Dr Khalfan bin Saeed Al Shuaili, Minister of Housing and Urban Planning, the initiative aims to leverage treated water in innovative agricultural projects. By embracing cutting-edge techniques, Oman seeks to unlock numerous opportunities, foster innovation, and empower small and medium enterprises across the country.

The core objectives of this initiative are twofold: to ensure a robust food supply for the nation and propel economic advancement by bolstering agricultural innovation plans.

Key features include the development and promotion of sustainable agricultural activities, the utilization of treated water derived from waste, and the integration of state-of-the-art technologies into farming practices.

By investing in local agricultural products and optimizing supply chains, the initiative guarantees easy access to consumers while creating new employment opportunities. Furthermore, it actively encourages small and medium enterprises to invest in the sector, serving as a catalyst for economic growth.

The initial phase of implementation will commence in the Wilayat of Al Amerat, where fertile land will be allocated for agricultural projects. Each participating small and medium company will receive 10 acres of prime land for investment. Innovation and technology centers dedicated to the agricultural sector will fuel unprecedented growth, providing a solid foundation for farmers, agricultural innovators, and emerging companies to thrive.

A comprehensive suite of services, including marketing and promotional support, technical guidance, and research and development assistance, will be readily available to ensure the success of all projects.

Eng Azhar bin Ahmed Al Kindi, Technical Director of the National Employment Program, emphasized the significance of this national initiative. As an integral part of Oman's economic track, it carefully examines supply chains and in-country value (ICV) across various sectors. This initiative aims to deliver sustainable development, create job opportunities for Oman's talented workforce, and foster the adoption of cutting-edge technologies by small and medium enterprises.

The agricultural endeavor is poised to generate a multitude of job opportunities for those passionate about agriculture.

Specialised areas for contracted cultivation, overseen by small and medium enterprises, will ensure year-round crop availability through the construction of advanced warehouses for agricultural products.

By increasing investments in food security and attracting transformative factories, specialized agricultural companies, and modern technologies, Oman aims to revitalise its agricultural sector.
