Muscat: SalamAir, the first low-cost carrier in the Sultanate of Oman, has launched twice-weekly direct flights to the city of Almaty in the Republic of Kazakhstan, on Saturday.

Using its latest Airbus aircraft, the airline bi-weekly flights are scheduled to fly on Saturdays and Wednesdays.

In a statement, Mohammed Ali Najmuddin, ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to the Sultanate, said the new destination will contribute to fostering bilateral relations between the two friendly countries, especially economic and tourism, adding, "We are counting on this historic step as it is the first scheduled flight between the two countries."

In a statement to the Omani News Agency, the ambassador expressed his hope that this destination would contribute to activating tourism, business growth and other fields between the Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Dr Anwar Mohammed Al Rawas, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Salam Air, said the addition of Almaty comes after getting an overview about the market and tourism potentials that the country possesses, which make it an attractive destination for many tourists.

Al Rawas expressed the company's aspiration to expand its fleet to various local, regional and international destinations according to a strategy based on real professional foundations.

Envisaged by Oman’s low budget airline, the new destination will help give travelers more travel options at the best prices.

Captain Mohamed Ahmed, CEO of SalamAir, noted that the company has now started operating two weekly flights in the hope of increasing them during the next stage.

Meanwhile, Salam Air covers 39 local, regional and international destinations, including Muscat, Salalah, Suhar, Duqm and Masirah, in addition to its international destinations.
