NEW YORK: The Sultanate of Oman outlined its experience in tolerance, coexistence and combating terrorism at the third UN counterterrorism week (CT Week) being held in New York.
Oman’s event was titled 'Towards a Society Free of Terrorism: The Omani Experience in Combating Terrorism and Extremism'.
During the event, Dr Mohammed Said al Ma’amari, Minister of Endowments and Religious Affairs, presented a paper themed 'Peaceful Coexistence in order to Promote Tolerance and Mutual Respect to Combat Terrorism'.
The paper dealt with Oman’s policy on international relations, which is typically based on peaceful coexistence among nations and peoples, good neighborliness, non-interference in the internal affairs of others and respect for the sovereignty of states.
The paper also underlined Oman’s contributions to resolving disputes by peaceful means.
In a similar gesture, Dr Mohammed Awadh al Hassan, Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the United Nations, presented a paper entitled 'The Omani Experience in Combating Extremism and Terrorism'.
The paper highlighted the salient features of Oman’s national strategy on combating terrorism. It unveiled the measures undertaken by Oman to protect society from extremism and terrorism, as well as efforts exerted by the country in combating terrorism and terrorism financing in the domestic and international arenas.
Organised by the National Counter-Terrorism Committee in cooperation with the Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs, the event was held under the auspices of Vladimir Voronkov, Under Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism at the UN Office. It was attended by Miguel Moratinos, UN High Representativefor theAlliance of Civilizations, heads of states and representatives of permanent missions accredited to the United Nations in New York. - ONA
