BERLIN: Berlin witnessed the remarkable participation of Oman, in the 16th edition of the World Summer Games of Special Olympics 2023. The official opening ceremony took place at the iconic Olympic Stadium, in the presence of Dr Frank-Walter Steinmeier, President of the Federal Republic of Germany, and Maitha bint Saif Al Mahrouqiyah, Ambassador of Oman to Germany.

The opening ceremony captivated audiences from around the world with mesmerising musical, light, and fire performances. Norwegian duo ‘Madcon’ took the stage, enthralling the crowd with their rendition of the official song, “Are you ready?” for the games.

The Omani Special Olympics delegation, comprising 36 players with mental disabilities and 9 partner players, demonstrated their exceptional talents in 13 different sports.

Ambassador Maitha Al Mahrouqi expressed immense pride in the Omani Special Olympics champions and their potential achievements during the Berlin 2023 event. She emphasised the opportunity for cultural exchange, promoting unity among nations and showcasing the indomitable human spirit’s ability to overcome challenges.

Highlighting Oman’s commitment to empowering individuals with disabilities, the ambassador recognised the participants’ determination and praised their presence at this esteemed international gathering. She expressed gratitude to the German government and the organising committee for their successful efforts in hosting the tournament.

Nayef bin Ahmed al Shanfari, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of Special Olympics Oman, lauded the significance of this participation for the players, enabling them to gain valuable experience and interact with diverse teams, while fostering their competitive spirit. The Omani Special Olympics delegation’s impressive performance in the previous World Summer Games, where they secured 12 gold medals in Abu Dhabi, positions them favourably against their competitors.

Al Shanfari emphasised the humanitarian nature of the Special Olympics movement, which utilises sports to serve individuals with intellectual disabilities and contribute to their well-being.

He stressed the importance of cultural exposure in shaping their personalities and facilitating their integration into society. Furthermore, he encouraged families to involve people with intellectual disabilities in various sports to enhance their overall quality of life.
