Biparjoy cyclone is Category 2, 980km away from Oman Coasts

Muscat: The latest weather maps and analysis of the National Multi-Hazard Early Warning Center indicate the development of a tropical system to a tropical cyclone CAT 2 in the center of the Arabian Sea and it lay centered on latitude 17.3 N and longitude 67.4 E, wind speed around the center is estimated between 83 to 90 knots, 980 km away from Sultanate coast.


"The cyclone that is 980 km away from the coast of the Sultanate is moving towards the center of the Arabian Sea, then to Pakistan / India later, and there is no direct impact on the Sultanate The wave height alert will continue with the flow of high and medium clouds."


As per the weather alert issued on Friday, 2 pm.


Saturday: The tropical cyclone is likely to intensify to CAT 2, the wind speed around the center is est between 83 to 90 knots with high and medium clouds advection over the coastal areas of the Arabian Sea.


Caution, maximum wave height may reach 3 to 5 meters along South al Sharqiya, Al Wusta, and Dhofar governorates.

The tropical cyclone will decrease to CAT 1, with high and medium clouds advection over the coastal areas of the Arabian Sea. Caution, maximum wave height may reach 4 to 6 meters along South al Sharqiya, Al Wusta, and Dhofar governorates with a chance of storm surge causing sea water inundation over low-level coastal areas.


Oman Meteorology has cautioned sea goers not to venture into the sea and not to involve in water activities as the sea status is expected to be rough (3-6) meters along the coastal strip of the Arabian Sea, starting from Friday, June 9 and for the next three days.


On the other side, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) has, also, called on fishermen not to go to sea or fishing during this period to avoid any possible developments of the tropical cyclone. Fishermen are urged to take required safety precautions and to tow their boats to the safest sites, the ministry reiterated.
