26,000 standard specifications contribute to innovation and quality: MoCIIP

The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP) continues to pay great attention to the preparation and issuance of the Omani and Gulf standard specifications, and to the study of the measurement and calibration of the international, regional and Gulf standard specifications for all goods, products, materials, services. The Ministry also works to update these standards in line with the continuous updating of the international specifications, in coordination with the concerned authorities.


The Directorate General of Standardization and Metrology at the Ministry has emphasized the contribution of standard specifications in promoting trade, industry and investment promotion, promoting ,facilitating the investment environment, opening gates for the best options of goods, products and services.

The standard specifications also help to enhance the quality of products, increasing competition, enhancing innovation, raising productive efficiency, improving local investment, supporting the organizing of the relationship between the buyer and the seller, while emphasizing aspects of health, safety and environmental protection.


The number of Omani and Gulf standard specifications in various industrial and service and other fields now exceeds 26,000 as of end-2022. These standard specifications cover many sectors such as the electricity sector, electronics, mechanics, minerals, food, and agricultural goods, chemistry, weaving, oil and gas, building and construction materials, standards, quality management, information and information technology sector.


Nadia bint Mohammed al Siyabiyah (pictured), Director of the Standards and Metrology Department, stated: "The standard specifications are a document that defines the relationship between the manufacturer, service provider and the service consumer in an optional capacity. It is issued by a third party, as it is prepared and formulated in cooperation and agreement between all the relevant authorities and based on the fixed results of science and technology, experience and subject to improvement and repeated application on a commercial scale and without technical challenges.”


She added: “The importance of the standard specifications in the advancement of local production to global levels and increasing its competitiveness, creating joint understanding between the parties who concerned with protecting the health and safety of consumer and the environment, reducing losses, raising the performance of the industries economies, supporting the national industry, and developing exports, through raising the level of quality.


She emphasized that, the standard specifications help to provide a reference framework and a common language between manufacturers and merchants, facilitating trade exchange and technology transfer, and enable producers to develop their products and services, by granting them the capability to compete in various markets around the world.


The official clarified that in 2022 alone, 732 Omani standards specifications were issued, which includes the technical requirements of electric vehicles, the description of the water meter boxes made of plastic, the plastic packages used to mobilize and save water (Zamzamia), the liquid artificial detergent for fabrics and clothes, and the binding standard for Omani kummah.


The standard specification of the hydrogen vehicle was also issued to help encourage and support the use of clean sustainable energy and to reduce carbon emissions. The standard specification of the hydrogen vehicles determines the requirements for safety needed to be provided in order to reduce the harm to humans when accidents occur, and to reduce pollutants resulting from gasoline and diesel fuel.
