In a city known for its vibrant cultural tapestry, an extraordinary art exhibit is captivating art enthusiasts and philanthropists alike. Nestled amidst the winding alleys and bustling streets of Muttrah, a group of young Omani children from the heart of this ancient port town are showcasing their remarkable artistic talents, shedding light on the importance of supporting their creative development.

Titled Zawaya (or Corners in English), the exhibit features a stunning collection of paintings created entirely by these young prodigies. Inaugurated under the auspices of HH Sayyida Basma al Said, this initiative not only offers a platform for these budding artists to express themselves but also serves as a testament to the power of artistic education in shaping their futures.

The exhibit is currently taking centrestage at the Saffron Cafe in Bait Al Zubair with over 50 paintings on display.

Visitors to the exhibition are immediately struck by the vivid colours and imaginative motifs that adorn the gallery walls. Each artwork reveals a unique perspective, blending traditional Omani themes with contemporary expressions.

At the heart of this exhibition are works of young prodigies like Idris who took inspiration from international artists and created his own version of popular artworks; Moez, whose artwork tells a vivid and beautiful story about life in general; and Sakina and Kawthar who drew faces that have dominated their minds.

The exhibitors were all students from the first cycle of schools from Muttrah supervised and curated by art teacher Bushra al Zahimiyyah working closely with representatives from the Albasayer School for Basic Education.

“The growth of a child’s talent is like the growth of flowers in a field. For a child’s talent to develop and get enhanced, it needs fostering and support and when he gets the proper nurturing, the child will thrive in his creativity and will have a beautiful future as an artist,”shared Bushra.

Bushra explained that programmes like this art exhibit will give budding artist the needed boost in order to become better artists.

The significance of this exhibit extends beyond the captivating artwork itself. It symbolises the transformative impact that creative development can have on a community, especially when nurtured from a young age. By providing these children with the necessary tools, resources, and guidance, art education programmes in Muttrah are empowering them to dream bigger, reach farther, and explore uncharted territories through their artistic endeavours.

Supporters of the exhibit are quick to acknowledge the broader benefits of investing in the creative growth of young minds. Research shows that engagement in the arts promotes cognitive development, nurtures critical thinking skills, and enhances emotional well-being. By fostering artistic expression among children, this initiative contributes not only to their personal growth but also to the cultural fabric of Oman as a whole.

Opening on May 24, the exhibit will be available to visitors until June 1, 2023. The gallery can be visited from 9am to 5pm daily except Fridays.

In a world often preoccupied with the pressures of modern life, the “Zawaya” art exhibit stands as a gentle reminder of the importance of nurturing young talents and fostering creativity. It serves as a beacon of hope, illuminating the path for the next generation of artists, dreamers, and innovators, and showcasing the power of art to transcend boundaries and transform lives.
