To prevent such incidents, it is important not to leave dangerous and flammable items such as fuel, perfumes, lighters, or any other materials containing gases inside the vehicles. These precautions can help minimise the risk of fire, which could result in significant losses.
To ensure a trouble-free summer and keep the vehicles cool, there are tips one should remember to prepare a car for the season. Proper periodic maintenance is crucial, especially in high temperatures. Failure to do so may lead to inefficiencies in the brake system due to increased friction and engine overheating. It is essential for the drivers to conduct regular maintenance checks, including monitoring the radiator water level, inspecting the entire cooling cycle, checking the engine oil, ensuring proper tyre air pressure, verifying brake system and suspension efficiency, monitoring the vehicle's temperature, confirming the functionality of the engine and cooling fans, checking the front and rear lights, warning signal lights, and ensuring the presence of safety equipment such as a spare tire, a fire extinguisher, and a warning triangle.
The Civil Defense and Ambulance Authority has provided some guidelines and educational advice to promote safety and prevent fires and accidents. They advise all citizens and residents to maintain their vehicles properly and avoid storing compressed packages, perfumes, air fresheners, gas canisters, lighters, dry batteries, or any other flammable materials inside their vehicles. If the vehicle's temperature rises significantly, drivers should pull over to the side of the road and avoid driving further. It's also important to avoid direct exposure to sunlight and, when parking the vehicle, simply open the windows for ventilation while ensuring that the vehicle does not experience excessive pressure.
In the event of a car fire, it is advisable to follow certain steps: If the car is in motion, signal other cars on the road, and safely drive the car to the side of the road while avoiding proximity to other vehicles or flammable objects. Then, turn off the engine and headlights, and immediately evacuate all passengers, moving to a safe area away from the burning vehicle. Report the fire to emergency services and warn other vehicles to stay clear of the burning car.
It is crucial to avoid inhaling toxic gases produced by the fire, as they are often more deadly than the flames themselves. If exposed to toxic gases, quickly move away from the fire. It's important to refrain from attempting to extinguish the fire yourself unless you are familiar with how to use a fire extinguisher and handle such situations. If the fire is small, you can use a fire extinguisher with caution.
