The Sultanate of Oman celebrated World Intellectual Property Day on Wednesday. As part of the celebrations, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion launched a new service that allows users to search for registered trademarks in the Sultanate of Oman.
The new service is part of the ongoing cooperation between the Omani National Intellectual Property Office at the Ministry and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).
Recently, all data of Omani national trademark applications were uploaded to the WIPO Global Brand Database, making Oman one of the first countries in the Arab region to provide all national trademark data on the international database on the WIPO website.
This initiative aims to enhance transparency in presenting trademark data in Oman, attracting international investments. Furthermore, it facilitates the process for all stakeholders and beneficiaries in the field of intellectual property to review the various activities that require protection in the Sultanate of Oman. They can extract statistics and build strategies for interacting with the Omani economy through investment or guidance in similar economies or international intellectual property entities. The database helps distinguish the project by its trademark and allows the investor to verify that the trademark is not registered in Oman.
There are two ways to conduct the search: Using the trademark name and selecting the country name (Oman), or uploading the logo of the trademark to ensure it is not registered or identical to another trademark and then selecting the country name to find out if the trademark is registered or not. The Ministry also enables those interested in registering their trademarks to apply for the service easily through the Invest Portal electronically.
The launch of the new trademark search service is a significant step in Oman's efforts to protect intellectual property rights and promote innovation. It is also a testament to the country's commitment to creating a business-friendly environment that attracts foreign investment.
It is worth mentioning that the number of intellectual property applications in various sectors submitted by women in the Sultanate of Oman reached 14,077 requests by the end of April of the current year. Furthermore, 33 female inventors have been registered in the field of patents until the end of 2022.
This shows that women are playing an increasingly important role in the innovation economy in Oman. The government is committed to supporting women's entrepreneurship and innovation, and the new trademark search service is one way that it is doing this.
