Oman thrash Kyrgyzstan to secure spot in quarters

Oman beach soccer team secured a slot in the quarterfinals of the Arab Beach Soccer Championship 2023 after thrashing Kyrgyzstan 14-0 on Wednesday at the Al Hamra Beach Stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The triumph lifted Oman’s tally to six points from two victories after they had registered a large win over Palestine 7-1 in the opener while they suffered a 5-3 defeat against Egypt in the second match.


Sami al Balushi and Abdullah al Souti scored four goals each in the match while Munthir al Oraimi and Al Yaqdhan al Hindasi netted two goals each. Nouh al Balushi and Khalid al Araimi struck one goal each.


Oman players dominated the match and did not face any difficulty to end the game on victory status. The national team players started their goal-scoring spree from the first half and continued the scoring in the second and third halves to complete the 14-0 mauling of the opponents.


In a later match on Wednesday, Group B toppers Egypt meet Palestine.


In Group A, Saudi Arabia defeated Morocco 4-3 to take the group’s lead. Mauritania beat Lebanon 5-3 on Wednesday.


The quarterfinals will take place on Thursday while the semifinals are set for Friday and the final is scheduled on Saturday. Oman will meet the Group C toppers, and it is likely to be the UAE team as they are leading the group with six points while Libya are second with three points. Comoros are in third place with one point while Kuwait are in fourth place with no points.


The 12 teams taking part in the tournament have been distributed into three groups. Hosts Saudi Arabia led Group A alongside Mauritania, Morocco and Lebanon while Oman are grouped with Palestine, Kyrgyzstan and Egypt in Group B. Group C features the UAE, Libya, Kuwait and Comoros.


In the other groups standings, Saudi Arabia are leading Group A with six points while Morocco are in second position with five points. Lebanon and Mauritania are in third and fourth places respectively with three points.


Oman team, coached by long-serving national coach Talib Hilal, will take part in the Fifa Beach Soccer World Cup UAE 2023 which will be held in UAE during November 16 to 26.
