Oman hosts food additive safety summit

MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, on Monday hosted sessions of the Food Additive Safety Summit, which aims to take measures to protect the health of consumers.


The two-day summit focuses on procedures of global systems and data requirements for endorsement of food additives.


Dr Saud bin Hamoud al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, the chief guest at the summit, said in a statement that the issue of food safety and quality assumes great significance to consumer health, as well as economic and commercial implications.


The event includes seminars and roundtable sessions dealing with several topics, such as global coordination and international regulations on food additives, GCC technical specifications and regulations on food additives and partnership between the public and private sectors in developing food safety systems, with special focus on food additives.


The summit is attended by representatives of government departments and private establishments from Oman and other GCC states, in addition to experts from international institutions.


Organised by the GCC Standardization Organization and international organisations concerned, the summit is held in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion and the American Business Council.
