More and more businesses in the capital are installing LCD or digital outdoor commercial signboards, bringing a vibrant look not only to their businesses but also to the capital and its busy streets.

Till recently, LCD commercial displays were visible only in certain areas of the city like Al Ghubra, hypermarkets, and a few retail stores, but one can come across LCD advertising displays installed by several small and medium outlets in various parts of the city, including in the commercial district of Ruwi.

Speaking to the Observer, one of the merchants said, “We are just taking advantage of the relaxed procedures announced by the authorities apart from the rationalisation of fees. I assume LCD audio-visual display boards are more attention-seeking as they are communicative compared to the commercial signages.”

As part of the efforts to streamline the process of conducting commercial activities and to improve the competitiveness of the Sultanate of Oman in the ease of doing business index, it was recently noted that the authority responsible for issuing permits for commercial signboards would rest with the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP) via Invest Easy platform.

The decision comes into effect from April 4 and is initially applicable only to new branches of the establishments.

The service fee will be RO 15 once at the time of registration, and there will be no need to renew permits.

Earlier, the permit for commercial signboards was issued by the local municipalities.
