Gratitude to healing hands...

Any profession in life is regarded more than just learning a number of skills, experiencing certain practices or acting in a particular way. Rather, being professional indicates administering precise care in a conscientious and knowledgeable way without causing harm to others. Nursing, for instance, is committed to providing care and nurturing of both healthy and sick people, individually, collectively or even as communities. Although a nurse does not have a complete independency in decision-making and practice, nursing marks a profession that requires an extended education and has a theoretical body of knowledge.

No one can deny that a nurse makes an immense difference in a society. A nurse deals with patients with unconditional kindness, empathy, and compassion, regardless of age, gender and health condition. As a matter of fact, the care and compassion of a nurse are just as important as the medicines prescribed by a doctor. Dag Hammarskjöld, Swedish economist and diplomat, said, “Constant attention by a good nurse may be just as important as a major operation by a surgeon.”

Being like a hero in a battlefield, a nurse has compassion and knowledge to understand what needs to be done every minute she is in a ward. A nurse’s care has touched many lives, skill has relieved those in pain, and devotion has brightened the day of so many patients. The compassion with which she has nursed patients is commendable. They will never forget a nurse’s kind heart, gentle ways of treatment and empathy. With a smile on her face, she never stops amazing people with how much effort she accords every day.

A nurse's selfless support towards a patient’s recovery is always praiseworthy! A nurse always leaves no stone unturned to make her job well done. It has been said that what love can’t cure, nurses can; I think nobody has any doubt or complaint on this! A nurse is someone whose smile inspires, hands that only know to care and touch make patients feel warmth and comfort.

Nursing, as a profession, is very difficult, challenging, and sometimes even unappreciated. A nurse is the first person who opens the eyes of a newborn and gently closes the eyes of a dying man. It is indeed a high blessing to be the first and last to witness the beginning and end of one’s life. That is why nurses actually deserve great appreciation for what all they do, being the backbone of healthcare. Their strength and kindness are undoubtedly extremely extraordinary.

Becoming a nurse means being one of the most selfless acts that a person can undertake. The hard work, sacrifices and kindness that nurses deliver on a daily basis in every hospital should urge everyone to recall the fundamental humanity inside us all. One has to always remember that behind the scrubs and lab coats there is an army of devoted professionals who deserve to be valued and celebrated. A nurse is regarded as a compassion in scrubs and a charming soul making a difference in every single day.

As the world is observing the International Nurses Day (May 12), it is time to express thanks and gratitude to every nurse who has been there for us all or loved ones during days of sickness. Locally, as per the 2022 records of the National Centre for Statistics and Information, there are over 22,800 nurses working in different government and private hospitals in the Sultanate of Oman. Salute to all those nurses who spare no effort to provide comfort, compassion and care for their patients of different ages, sicknesses and attitudes.

The healing hands and caring hearts of nurses are a true blessing to those they care for. Doctors cure patients with medicines, whereas nurses cure them with hope, care, and compassion. Thank you nurses for never giving up on life! A sincere bow of respect to all the hard-working nurses whose skill and commitment make an impact on humans’ well-being!
