LYON: The National Museum of Oman, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Youth, has launched an exhibition and activities to commemorate Oman Day. Titled ‘Journey to the Land of Frankincense,’ the exhibition is being held at the Museum of Fine Arts in Lyon, France.

Under the patronage of Gregory Doucet, Mayor of Lyon, the event will continue until September 10. The exhibition showcases 25 items that highlight the beauty, cultural richness, and historical significance of the Sultanate of Oman.

It offers a glimpse into Omani traditions, beliefs, knowledge-seeking endeavours, and commercial heritage.

The exhibition aims to strengthen cultural diplomacy and foster friendship between Oman and France. The Museum of Fine Arts in Lyon, one of the prominent museums in France, is hosting the exhibition, marking the first-ever Omani museum exhibition in the country outside of Paris.

Visitors will have the opportunity to explore Oman's captivating heritage, from its ancient civilisations to the present day. The event kicked off with a musical performance by Omani artist Musallam bin Ahmed al Kathiri, accompanied by Al Balad Musical Band.

The exhibition delves into the historical trade routes connecting Oman with Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley, ancient Egypt, East Africa, and the Roman Empire. Notable artifacts include an inscribed tablet from Samhuram, a necklace from the Middle Bronze Age, and an incense burner from Khor Ruri. Additionally, treasures from the Unesco World Heritage site of Qalhat are on display, including decorative elements from the Qalhat Mosque.

The exhibition also features the renowned Snow Treasure, a jar containing coins dating back to 710-717 AD. The exhibition aims to provide visitors with a captivating cultural experience that celebrates Oman's rich heritage.

Jamal bin Hassan al Moosawi, Secretary-General of the National Museum, announced a partnership with the Museum of Fine Arts in Lyon as part of their cultural diplomacy efforts. The collaboration aims to strengthen bonds of friendship and promote Omani cultural heritage through a curated selection of archaeological artifacts. – ONA
