GERMANY: RWE plans to enter the hydrogen filling station business in partnership with the Westfalen Group, with the German energy company wanting to build up to 70 hydrogen filling stations across Germany by 2030.

At these stations, heavy commercial vehicles in particular will be able to refuel with hydrogen produced in a climate-neutral way, the two companies announced in the city of Essen on Wednesday. The companies plan to found a joint venture.

According to the H2Stations portal, 105 hydrogen filling stations were in operation in Germany at the end of 2022. Across Europe, there were 254.

The first filling station under the joint venture is to go into operation in 2024 in Lingen, Lower Saxony, in front of the site of RWE's Emsl and gas power plant.

Green hydrogen from a 14-megawatt pilot electrolysis plant that RWEis currently building on the site of the gas-fired power plant will be sold there.

The German Ministry of Transport is funding the construction of the filling station in Lingen with more than ?6 million ($6.6 million).

The next filling stations are to be built first in the states of North Rhine Westphalia and Lower Saxony - in coordination with logistics companies from the region.

According to the information provided, the first sites will be built in the vicinity of logistics centres. Later, locations along motorways are also planned.— dpa
