The National Employment Program recently held an informative seminar for students from the German University of Technology and the Arab Open University, introducing the government's role in supporting freelance work in the Sultanate of Oman through the Freelance Work Initiative.
The National Employment Program is collaborating with several government agencies to promote the initiative and the Khuta platform for professional guidance and counseling. This seminar is part of a series of informative, scientific, and methodological events organized by the program to inform various segments of society about the importance of benefiting from the Freelance Work Initiative, in line with the directives of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik to promote the philosophy and culture of freelance work among the Omani community to support and develop the Omani economy.
During his speech at the seminar, Ghassan bin Fadhil Beit bin Salim, Head of the Economic Track at the Program, emphasized that freelance work is a form of non-permanent contracting and employment not tied to a specific location or institution. He also highlighted the flexibility of skilled labor mobility and the use of cloud-based databases, the ability to work remotely, the use of algorithm-driven smart systems, and the increase in short-term employment contracts worldwide as key features of the free economy labor market. Global statistics on freelance work show that annual income from such work reaches $1.2 trillion, and there are 777 active freelance work platforms worldwide as of 2021.
Beit bin Salim explained that freelance work offers various benefits to individuals and the economy, including flexibility in work, ease of contracting, local and global job opportunities, skill and experience development for individuals, increased productivity for the economy, cost savings, access to skilled labor, and the ability to utilize their accumulated experience.
The National Employment Program's support for freelance work is part of Oman's vision for sustainable economic development, diversification, and job creation, aligned with the Oman Vision 2040 objectives.
