Muscat: Oman Transplantation Society has launched a national campaign to raise awareness among society members on the importance of organ donation.

One of the objectives of the campaign is to have 100,000 registrations through the Ministry of Health's 'Shifa" application in the first year of the campaign because each person can save eight lives through organ donation.

It was said at a press conference on Tuesday, "Believing in the importance of organs being the vital tissues that make the body function fully and when a particular member fails, it requires immediate treatment to replace it with a new, healthy organ from a donor.

Common organ transplants include heart, liver, kidney, bone marrow, pancreas, liver, and eyes.

Some organs such as kidneys, part of the pancreas, or liver can be donated to the needy through a donor, but most of the donation operations take place after the donor's brain death, which means brain dead and functioning.

Some of the highlights:

A brain-dead donor can donate up to eight organs.

A normal living person can donate a kidney and a part of the liver

24 liver and 325 kidney transplants done in Oman so far.

2,275 are currently on the waiting list for hemodialysis.

There are 8,000 organ donors registered on the Al Shifa application.
