Salalah clinch OAA Shield Championship

Salalah club wrapped up the 2022-23 season with two titles as they claimed the top place in senior and youth categories of Oman Athletics Association (OAA) Shield Championship which concluded on Saturday at Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex. The twin triumph meant Salalah-based team topped the domestic clubs order while Al Salam club from Al Batinah North came in second and Masirah club finished third.


As many as 16 clubs took part in this edition of the OAA Shield Championship which featured different competitions including races of 100 metres, 200 metres, 400 metres, 800 metres, 1,500 metres, 400 metres hurdles, high jump, 3,000 metres, javelin and 4x400 metres relay. The competition began on Friday and ran for two days. The objective of the event was to open the doors for all the talented athletes to join the national teams.

Salim al Amri, Chairman of OAA, said the championship registered a good success in its renewed edition. “We are very glad with the number of participated clubs in the men’s OAA Shield Championship besides other 18 clubs who took part in the ladies competition. The main target was to attract the top candidates to represent the national athletics teams in the near future,” he said.


The chief of OAA affirmed that all the coaching staff from different teams were available to closely watch the athletes’ performance and monitor the top performers,” he added.


In the senior level, Salalah club took the first-place award while Masirah club were positioned as runners-up and Saham club finished third. In the youth category, Salalah club bagged the gold medals while Al Salam club claimed the silver medals and Masirah club athletes claimed bronze medals.


In the junior level, the Northern Batinah team, Al Salam, clinched the gold while Salalah came in second and Masirah team finished third.


At the end, chief guest Sayyid Idrees bin Mansoor al Busaidy, General Manager of Administrative and Financial Directorate at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, delivered the awards and medals to the top winners in different categories in presence of Salim al Amri, Chairman of OAA, and other officials.
