MUSCAT: Maritime cargo volumes handled by Omani seaports accounted for a sizable 77.8 per cent of total trade recorded by the Sultanate of Oman in 2022, according to figures released by Directorate General of Customs – Royal Oman Police. Ranked second were land ports, while airports in third place, accounted for the balance.

This data emphasizes the critical role played by maritime ports in the Omani economy and underlines the need for further investment and development in this sector. The report also indicates the potential growth opportunities that exist in the land and air transport sectors, which could be leveraged for greater trade and economic benefits.

Meanwhile, Asyad Ports, a subsidiary of Asyad Group – the integrated end-to-end logistics services provider of the Sultanate of Oman, also reported a significant increase in handling volumes and financial revenues in 2022.

Asyad Ports handled a total of 3.326 million tonnes of general cargo across several ports, including Port Sultan Qaboos, Khasab Port, and the ports of Sohar and Shinas, representing an increase of 88 per cent over corresponding figures for 2021. Asyad Ports' financial revenues and net profits also increased by 15 per cent compared to 2021.

A recent report by the subsidiary also highlighted the strategic role of Asyad Ports in Oman's National Logistics Strategy 2040 by connecting medium-sized ports to direct commercial markets in various countries and ensuring food security through direct imports.

Additionally, Port Sultan Qaboos witnessed a 135 per cent increase in tourist ship visits in 2022, with 61 ships carrying over 149,000 tourists, reinforcing Oman's status as a favourite marine tourism destination in the region.
