Washington: UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres hailed the role of the Sultanate of Oman in supporting international efforts exerted to settle and resolve differences in the Republic of Yemen and achieve rapprochement in views of countries of the region.

Guterres stressed that the establishment of sound relations among all countries of the region constitutes a key factor for stability and development. In this context, he affirmed that Muscat was and still is a gateway to peace.

Guterres made the statement during the annual Iftar gathering held at ‘Oman House’ in the premises of Oman's Mission at the UN in New York by Dr Mohammed Awad al Hassan, Permanent Representative of the Sultanate of Oman to the UN. The iftar was attended by the GCC ambassadors accredited to the UN.

Guterres also underlined the positive developments currently taking place in the Gulf region and the Arabian Peninsula.

The UN chief pointed out that the international community values Oman’s efforts which, he said, lead to peace and coexistence.

Guterres also expressed sorrow over human suffering experienced by the Palestinian people in the occupied Arab territories. He underscored the need to maintain global humanitarian efforts and relief aid to help the Palestinian refugees, notably through constant funding of activities of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
