The Sultanate of Oman’s population, which was around 4.5 million in 2020, is expected to be between 8.1 million to 8.7 million by 2040.
According to the population projection report released by National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI), the percentage of expatriates in the total population is expected to drop to 33 per cent from the current level of around 50 per cent.
The country’s population crossed the 5-million mark on March 22, with Omanis constituting 57.62 per cent (2,881,313), and the rest 42.38 per cent (2,119,459).
As per the e-census results of December 2020, the population increased by 61 per cent in 10 years from the 2010 census.
If the population growth is low (2.8 per woman), the Sultanate of Oman’s population will be 5.3 million in 2025, 6.1 million in 2030 and 7 million by 2035, and 8.1 million by 2040.
If the population growth is moderate (3.3 per woman), the population will be 5.3 million in 2025, 6.1 million in 2030 and 7.1 million by 2035, and 8.3 million by 2040.
If the population growth is high (4 per woman), the country’s population will be 5.3 million in 2025, 6.2 million in 2030 and 7.3 million by 2035, and 8.7 million by 2040.
The life expectancy of Omanis is expected to increase from 76.2 in 2020 to 78.4 in 2030 and 79.8 in 2040.
The number of Omanis in the age group (15-59) will increase by 7 per cent during the period (2003-2040), while Omanis in the age group (0-14) will drop by 11 per cent during the same period.
The percentage of Omanis in the age group 60 and above will increase by 5 per cent during the period (2003-2040).
The percentage of Omanis in the age group (15-59) will increase by 5 per cent during the period (2020-2040), while the Omanis in the age group (0-14) will decrease by 8 per cent during the period (2020-2040).
NCSI said the population projections, including citizens and expatriates, have been made with the population of 2020 as a base year.
