According to the latest information received from the Bureau of Immigration, India received 6.19 million Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) during 2022 as compared to 1.52 million during the same period of 2021,” Reddy said.
In a written reply in India’s Upper House (Rajya Sabha), Reddy said There were 10.93 million Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) in India during the pre-pandemic year of 2019. The pandemic brought the number down to 1.52 million during the same period in 2021.
There are central government schemes to promote tourism in the country. State governments and Union Territories et financial assistance under schemes like Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD) and Swadesh Darshan for the development of tourism-related infrastructure to enrich the tourism experience for the visitors.
To provide assistance to foreign tourists, the ministry has set up a 24x7 multi-lingual tourist helpline in 12 languages, including German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi, and English.
India has the presidency of G-20 meetings this year. There are 55 destinations throughout the country where the meetings are happening. These meetings are also seen as a boost to tourism in India. Government agencies are involved in improving the infrastructure in the cities where the G-20 meetings are happening.
Apart from highlighting tourism offerings in India, there are excursion arrangements for the delegates near the meeting venues. Overall the idea is to promote India's tourism destinations.
